Moving day is a busy day for families, which is why figuring out logistics ahead of time always makes sense.
We factor in a lot of things to make sure things go smoothly and everyone is taken care of. But what about pets?
Here are some Great Tips for Moving with Pets.
Short-Medium Distance Moves
When moving with pets, your planning needs to take into consideration the type of pet, and their health considerations, as the needs of dogs, cats, birds, fish or reptiles vary.
To reduce stress for pets like dogs, cats, or birds, keep them away from the action. And take them in the vehicle with you. If you’ve got a high-anxiety animal, sedation might be a smart idea, especially for longer moves.
When moving, you always need to know where your pet’s essentials are. Keep a bag with your pet’s food, water bottles, bowls, medication, or anything else you need in an easily accessible location.
It’s recommended that if you live nearby the property you’ll be moving to, homeowners should bring animals like dogs or cats to familiarize themselves with the home. Dogs and cats should also be fitted with collars and ID tags with your phone number, and microchips.
For longer trips, you’ll need to create basic checklists of your pet’s needs.
Upon arrival, dogs and cats should be given their own space, containing their food, bed, and toys, to help them feel as comfortable as possible.
Flying with Pets
If your move involves flights, you’ll need to research travel requirements and consider using a pet relocation service.
Make sure to get your vets to send your pet’s health records. Vaccination records may be required before flying.
And if flying, make sure to check the airline's rules to see if your pet’s breed is allowed on planes and can travel with you or if it needs to be transported in cargo.
